I’m a professional photographer, and I’d like to share my thoughts on what makes a successful business portrait.

Generally, as a rule, a portrait is the idea of expressing the idea of who the sitter is.

First: Connection with the viewer

You have to look at them like they’re your best friend or your lover. If you’re not making eye contact, they won’t feel connected to you. Folks tend to forget that the viewer is not themselves but their client on the other side of the screen. A great photographer will coach you into giving your best look for a genuine connection.

Second: Connection with your photographer

You have to trust that they’re going to capture who you are in a way that people will understand and appreciate.

If a photographer isn’t sure how to make this happen, they may not be able to help you create an image that reflects who you really are—and that’s what portraiture is all about!

Third: Lighting

This is where most photographers fail. They think it’s just about getting enough light on your face without washing out the colours in your clothes or hair by using too much fill flash (which actually does more harm than good).
Lighting is more than that—it’s about creating contrast so that the viewer can see what’s important. IMHO, eye contact.

Fourth: confidence!

You want people to see something unique about you when they look at your portrait.
What makes YOU different from everyone else?
What makes YOU interesting?
What makes YOU stand out from the crowd?

When we look at someone who seems confident, we ask, ‘do they look comfortable and poised? Would I like to get to know a little more about this person?

Final words:

When creating headshots/branding images, many folks go for the cheapest option. They often see a headshot they love but don’t understand the process of how the photographer got that look/style.

Before you even consider the price of portraits, you should have a budget in mind. You can stay within your budget, but you first need to consider speaking to the photographer whose work you genuinely admire. Often we can work to your budget if you can fully interact with the photographer about your needs. There is a lot more than just a checklist that makes a great session. You need to have a connection and a good rapport.

That’s what makes a successful portrait!
